Spending Time With The Father

Aubrey and I went up to Wisconsin this past weekend to visit with my sister and see their new baby get baptized. We left our three children with Aubrey’s parents and my parents helped some during the days. We had a really great time and it was the first time in many years that Aubrey and I were able to fly together. When we got back home on Monday evening, Aubrey’s dad picked us up from the airport while her mom and granny watched the kids back at our house. The kids were furiously trying to create welcome home cards to give to use when we got back.

Returning Home

When we did reach the house, my son had not finished his card. He is just like me and does not like it when things do not go according to plan. So he became extremely sad, angry and frustrated; he actually refused to come out of his room for a while. After both Aubrey and I spent time with him in his room, loving on him and reassuring him he finally came out. We both told him that the most important thing for us was just spending time with him, even if he didn’t finish his card. It took a long time until he finally smiled again and became his regular, jovial self again.

Relating to our Heavenly Father

Through all of this I started to think of how I (we) relate to our heavenly Father, God. Are there things in our life that we feel we need to finish before we can spend time with God? Do we ever feel like we haven’t measured up to being with God? Are we so disappointed in ourselves and our lack of achievment that we cannot go to Him?

I know that God feels (at least in some way) the way I did toward my son. He just wants to spend time with us! It’s you and me, the people that He created us to be, that God loves. I’m not really sure why sometimes, but that’s the way it is. So the next time I feel like I can’t pray or I can’t worship, I’m going to try and remember… God just wants us to come to Him and spend time with Him. He wants us to love Him and give Him our affections, just like I feel towards my children.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
